As technology advances, we are more connected with the outside world than ever before. This connection allows us to be more efficient with daily operations, however it can also expose your business to greater risk. According to industry reports, the number of cyber attacks per month had increased by 23% in 2017. One effective way that businesses can protect themselves against attackers is through the use of a good network security system.

What is Network Security?

Network security refers to hardware and software provisions taken to ensure the protection of organisational assets. Network security integrates many layers of protection in the computer network through systems and controls. No matter the size of the organisation, a breach of network security can be detrimental, causing the interruption of data and loss of sensitive information from client information to intellectual property.

The 5 Main Types of Network Security:

1. Network Access Control

This form of network security controls the level of permission users have access to. It allows you to monitor who has access to network resources and those who should be blocked out. Behavioural analytics tools can also be set up on this network to notify you of any unusual behaviour.

2. Application Security

This is the use of hardware and software to protect your applications. As many business devices run on applications, it is essential to ensure that they are secure. Most applications have an unintended flaw or weakness which can lead to cyber criminals gaining entry into the organisation’s systems.

3. Antivirus and antimalware software

Malware, short for malicious software is a “disease” on your network which is designed to gain access into a computer without the knowledge of the owner. Malware can stay undetected on your network and then later attack, causing your system to malfunction. Types of malware includes viruses, trojans, ransomware and spyware. Good antivirus and antimalware software can easily detect and constantly scan the network for abnormalities, remove malware and fix the damage.

4. Email Security

Email security are the measures used to secure the access and content of email accounts and services. They are also the number one threat for security breach. With most businesses relying on emails as their primary point of contact with clients, email security is essential to ensure that hackers do not gain access to your personal account. Phishing attacks are attempts to obtain sensitive information such as passwords, usernames and credit card details. If attackers have this information, they can resort to blackmail or deceive your clients by sending emails on your behalf. Email security can effectively block incoming attacks and control outbound messages.

5. Wireless Security

There is a pronounce increase in wireless networks and devices as businesses migrate to a cloud system. Although the cloud has the advantage of flexibility and convenience, it is not as secure as wired networks which allow greater access for cyber attacks.

As well as setting up protection from external factors, it is also wise to conduct education and training for employees to ensure they are aware and updated on security policies. This will allow a discussion with the company’s expectations of employee compliance and education on the effect of security breaches for the individual and the business.
